I’m all about music. I don’t make music, but I simply love to listen to an absurd amount of it. It is a key tool on a day-to-day basis. I think that it is perfect for tuning in, keeping up, and smoothing things out when it’s the right moment. When used properly, music is just indispensable for any individual.

Some of the benefits

As the neuroscientist Kiminobu Sugaya points out, music helps with many different things. It can affect your time perception, evoke memories, help with diseases like Parkinson’s, and reduce seizures. So why wouldn’t you incorporate music more often into your life?

Music in the workplace

One of the first offices I worked in as a designer had a big B&W Zeppelin close to my desk. My colleague had the privilege of setting the mood for everyone. It might sound challenging, but he got it right every single day.

That routine created a connecting thread between hours, tasks, and people's moods. I noticed the difference when I started working in environments where that sound was replaced with just the bare noise of keyboards. Luckily, that hasn’t happened frequently after that!

That sound that doesn't want to leave your mind

A couple of years later, I became quite interested in the earworm phenomenon. I don’t know about you, but I usually wake up every day with some tune in my mind.

If you haven’t heard of earworms, they are catchy pieces of music that play repeatedly in a person’s mind. They can last for minutes, hours, or even days. Many factors can cause earworms, but they can also appear without an obvious cause. They appear and stay until they want to leave.

Back then, I also created a project about a sound recognition tool to finally get rid of those earworms whose names you didn’t know: https://landerzaro.com/work/earworm-app

There is so much out there that limiting yourself is like a bird getting into a cage on its own.

Music is the perfect mood setter and an awesome icebreaker.

And what’s the first contact point between you and your favorite song? It might be hearing it on social media, in a movie, an ad, on the radio, on Spotify, or by getting your hands on vinyl and digital artworks, and letting yourself dive into the visual world of the music first.

The image behind the sound

There are many creators beyond musicians who are related to music and let us start wondering how it will sound. We can look to the lucky people in charge of polishing the UIs that we use daily to explore and listen to our favorite music, or even to those that create the image of the music, like The Creative Corporation, Studio Herrström, Big Active, Non-Format, and many others.

Some obvious or not-that-obvious tips:

  • Get to explore: There is so much out there that limiting yourself is like a bird getting into a cage on its own. You might feel safe there, but it doesn’t make much sense to live like that.

  • Check the covers and artworks of your current music. Observe it and try to understand its connection with the actual sound.

  • Give different genres a chance: There’s room for many different styles in your brain!

  • Take your kids to music lessons: Let them pick whatever they like, set their own pace, and help them keep exploring.

  • Create your own playlists: Tailor them to different moods, activities, or times of day to enhance your experience.

  • Tell me what you think about some of my playlists!

  • Share your favourite song of this month with me! I'm always looking to chat and share music.

Add your own OST into your life. From boosting moods to connecting tasks and making your day better, its role is just invaluable. Embrace music exploration in your daily routine and creative processes to unlock its full potential!
